  老师:Okay, now let's begin the class. Today we are going to learn Book 5, Unit 1, reading 2, be a critical newsreader. In today's class, we shall first review the text and then discuss how to use some of the words and phrases. And finally, we will practice using them in different situations.

  老师:Okay, now let's review. So as to news report 1, do you still remember deaths and injuries? Probably five dead. What about rescue efforts? Fire engines and ambulances arrived within 15 minutes after being called. Firefighters got the situation under control around eleven PM and then what caused the fire?   老师:Okay, now let's come to reading news reports critically. So why do news reports differ from or even contradict each other? First, journalists may have different priorities. Second, news reports may be written at different stages of an event. Last, journalists may approach information they get from research or interviews differently.

  老师:Then, how can we be critical newsreaders? First, we need to read different news reports on the same event, written from various perspectives at different stages. And we need to be critical about the information we receive and remember not to blindly trust what we have read. Okay, now let's move on to work.

  老师:Study. The first one. Be a critical newsreader. Here, critical means involving making fair, careful judgments about the good and bad qualities of somebody or something is an adjective. And criticize is a verb. We can say criticize somebody for something, peeping motion. Criticism is a noun. And critic means a person who expresses opinions about the good and bad qualities of books, music, and so on. And also there is a phrase, be critical of something. Okay?

  老师:Now, please try to get the meanings of critical in the following sentences. Number one, reducing levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is of critical importance. What does critical mean here? It means extremely important. Okay? Number two, Tom's parents were highly critical of the school. That means they criticized the school and didn't think highly of it. Number three, one of the victims of the fire remains in a critical condition. Then what does critical mean in this sentence? It means serious, uncertain, and possibly dangerous. Okay, now let's come to next sentence. The fire, which is thought to have started from the 8th floor, spread quickly through the tower block on Saturday night, leading people on the upper floors trapped. What does trapped mean here? It means they were in an unpleasant situation in which they lack freedom and couldn't escape from it. Here is the usage of trap and there are two phrases.

  老师:be trapped in 被困在什么什么当中?

  老师:Trap somebody into doing something.
