23 Unit4 Natural Disasters Reading for Writing

  老师:Hello, everyone. Welcome to the English class. Our topic today is natural disasters. In this class you will read a news report about a natural disaster. In two summaries of the news report, you will conclude what a summary is and how to write a summary. You will also write two summaries.

  老师:What natural disaster are we going to read about? Please look at the picture. You can see a picture of a tsunami. Besides the picture, what else can you see? We can see tsunami hits Asia, over 6500 dead. What is it? Yes, is the title of the news report. Below it we can see by Robert Woodhouse, Monday, 27th December, 2004. What is it? Very good. They are the reporters name and the release date. On the top, we can see the Daily News and it must be the name of the newspaper.

  老师:So everyone, according to this, we know we are going to read about a news report of a tsunami. What main points should be included in a news report about a natural disaster? Very good. Time, place, course, damage and rescue, very good.

  老师:Usually in a news report about a natural disaster, you can see information like this. When and where did the natural disaster happen? Why did the natural disaster happen? Or what caused it? What damage was caused by it? How was the rescue done? And what more to come?

  老师:Next, please turn to page 54. Read the news report about a tsunami. Please answer the 4 questions. Let's look at the four questions one by one. When did the tsunami happen? No. 2, what caused the tsunami? No. 3, why would it be difficult to deliver food and supplies? No. 4, what do the numbers in a news report represent? Have you finished reading? Let's look at four questions one by one. Number one, when did the tsunami happen? Where can you get information? In the beginning of the text, very good. The first sentence goes like this, the most powerful earthquake in the past 40 years caused a tsunami that crashed into coastlines across Asia yesterday. According to the word yesterday, we know this news report was released just one day after the tsunami. Do you still remember the release date? Do you still remember when was a news report published? Very good memory. It was released on 27 December 2004. Now we know the tsunami happened on 26 December, 2004.

  老师:The second question, what caused the tsunami? Where can you find information? Yes. The second sentence reads, fishermen, tourists, hotels, homes and cars were swept away by huge waves caused by the strong earthquake that reached a magnitude of 9.0. From this sentence, we know a very powerful earthquake of 9.0 magnitude, which happened under the sea of the West Coast of Sumatra island in Indonesia, caused the tsunami.
