As in school, we can play football, basketball, tennis, long jump and cycling and many others. So many sports activities are available to all of us. Actually, there are also many sporting events. How much do you know about the sporty events in the world?

  学生:Unit 2, Sports Culture. Welcome to the unit. It's January again. Today we'll be looking ahead at the year's top sporting events. And we've got some important dates for your diary. The year kicks off with the Australian Open, the largest annual sporting event held in Melbourne, Australia.

  学生:It's commonly held during the last two weeks of January. Started in . It is the youngest of the four Grand Slam tournaments. Sometimes it takes place indoors during wet weather or extreme heat. Winning a Grand Slam event is a great achievement in the professional tennis world. So when Lena won the Australian Open in 2014, she was very proud.

  学生:Along with China, next to Formula 1 motor racing, the world's fastest motor race, the charm of speed and high tech makes it one of the world's most attractive sporting events.

  学生:Grand Prix, French for great prizes, are a series of races of a Formula 1 season.

  学生:And the Chinese Grand Prix held in April in Shanghai, is an event not to be missed in the racing calendar.

  学生:The course is famous for its difficult corners, which really put drivers through their paces.

  学生:After that, why not head to Europe this summer for some two wheeled excitement? The tour de France. This historic event is a team competition with 8 cyclists in each team.

  学生:It lasts for over three weeks and there are 21 stages. Each stage is an individual competition where the winner of the stage gets to wear the famous yellow shirt at the start of the next stage.

  学生:The overall winner is the cyclist who completes the race with the shortest time and is awarded the yellow shirt after the final stage.
