1 Welcome to the unit

  老师:Today we are going to learn, welcome of Unit 1. In this class we are to focus on mass media. And by the end of this class you are supposed to get to know what mass media is, know about the types as well as the influence that mass media has on society. In this fast changing world, getting hold of the most updated information is of great significance. So I am wondering how you guys keep yourselves well inform and can you share it with us.

  老师:Just as you mentioned, reading through newspapers, watching TV, listening to radio, browsing the web pages, reading billboards on the road are all possible ways to get information. Now here comes a question. What do the ways you have mentioned have in common what are the similarities between the ways? Yes, they provide interesting information and a lot of people can get this kind of information. So what about challenging yourself to give mass media a definition?

  老师:Mass media refers to all mass technologies intended to reach a large audience via mass communication. Here, reach a large audience means not only you, but also many other people. Various types of mass media have developed over time. Now, please watch the video and finish following exercise. Now let's enjoy the video.

  学生:The term mass media was used for the first time during the 1920s. It refers to the sources of information and news that reach a large audience.

  学生:However, the mass media existed long before the term was used, and over time different types of media have developed.

  学生:Take a walk through the city shops and you won't be able to find a view without outdoor media, which is one of the earliest forms of mass communication. Outdoor media has been around since ancient times.

  学生:All shop signs, posters and other advertisements outside buildings and inside shop windows are forms of outdoor media.

  学生:Another early form of mass communication is print media, which gained its foothold in distribution to the masses with the invention of printing.

  学生:Continued improvements over the centuries allowed books, magazines and newspapers to be printed in large quantities.

  学生:Broadcast media has two main components, radio and television.

  学生:Around the start of the 20th century, people began to develop radio technology.

  学生:And by the 1920s, people were tuning into radio programs for news and entertainment.

  学生:The television appeared in the USA and the UK in the 1920s.

  学生:Over time, watching news on television, first in black and white and then in color, became a daily habit for many people.

  学生:The digital industry began with the invention of the internet.

  学生:First available for public use in the 1990s, it quickly became the center of mass media.
