3 Grammar and usage

  老师:Hi dear students, nice to meet you here. In this period, we are going to talk about grammar, sentence elements and sentence structures. After entering senior high school, you must have experienced a new life which is quite different from junior high school. And if you want to have a happy and promising life in senior high school, setting goals is of great importance and necessity.

  老师:So 1st, let's read a short speech about the importance of setting goals by Miss Yen on page six. While reading, pay attention to the underlying sentences and try to fill in the table. Please read.

  老师:It might be a little bit challenging for you to fill in the table, so I'd like to give you some explanations of these sentences. The first one, I agree, is a short sentence. I is the subject. Agree is an interesting verb. Doesn't take an object. In the second sentence, setting goals gives you a focus in life. Setting goals acts as a subject. So doing sometimes can be used as the subject of a sentence. GIF is a trusted verb and a transceiver should be followed by an objects.

  老师:There are two objects in the sentence. Could you tell me what they are? Yes, you and a. Focus in life. Next sentence. These habits will be helpful. Obviously, B is a linking verb. After linking verb, we often have a predictive. Number. Four, setting goals makes you more confident. Setting goals is a subject, makes the verb you object. How about more confident? Why is it used here? Think about it.

  老师:More confident is used to give us more information about the object. You, meaning you, are more confident. And we call it object compliment. In the last sentence, you will live a happy life. The pronoun you is the subject. Leaf is a trustever. Just as we said, a trusted verb often takes one or two objects. Now I think it's quite easy for you to fill in the table. You have two minutes to finish.

As I mentioned just now, B is a linking verb, which is often followed by a predictive. The next sentences, you will leave a happy life. The transitive verb leave is followed by the object, a happy life. Next one is setting goals. Gives you a focus in life. The transiever give takes two objects. You is the indirect objects.
