  老师:Hello everyone, I'm Zhu Jie from Liang Xiang High School, affiliated to Beijing Normal University. Welcome to my class. From today on, we are going to learn Unit 2, improving yourself, about the topic of self improvement. In this lesson, we are going to deal with the first passage in this unit, social media detox and focus on reading.

  老师:Actually, in our daily lives, we have a lot of temptations like our phones and the video games. In it, we have some bad habits like sleeping late, eating too much. We also have some negative emotions like anger. All of this will unnecessarily consume our time and energy.

  老师:So at this time, we need to control ourself. So each of us need to possess the ability of self control. Can you control yourself? 1St, I want you to complete a questionnaire and find out how good your self control is. You have 3 minutes to finish this questionnaire and after that I will give you some explanations. Okay, time is up. So in the five questions of the questionnaire, all the things and situations in which we need to control ourselves are included. If most of your answers are a, that means you are a very good self controller. If most of your answers are B, you can control yourself most of the time. But if most of your answers are, say, perhaps you still need some time to improve your self control. Even if most of your answers are see, don't worry, I want to tell you, it is not only you who can't control yourself in face of these temptations and other situations.

  老师:Nowadays in our life, one of the biggest temptations is our phone and the social media in it. Next, I would like to offer you some facts for the Chinese people of their using of social media. Let's see here. 1St, on average, Chinese internet users each spend two hours a day on social media, a total of 730 hours each year. Next, the average age of social media users in China in 2017 was 33.1 years old, as against 32.4 in 2016 and 31.2 in 2015. The last fact is that the top four negative aspects of social media as ranked by Chinese users, are reduced time for reading printed books, empower eyesight privacy and information security concerns, and reduced sleep time.

  老师:Okay, after we read the facts using social media in China, I have a question. What conclusions can you draw from these facts? You have three minutes to think about it and later I will share with you my answer. Okay, time is up. We can say like this. We can infer from the facts that Chinese internet users spend a lot of time on social media, negatively affecting different aspects of their lives, and that the average age of social media users in China has risen during recent years.
