29 Unit 6 Disaster and hope(4)

  老师:Hello everyone, I'm CAI Shengjie from Liang Xiang High.

  学生:School, affiliated to Beijing Normal University. In today's lesson, we are going to learn Developing Ideas section in Unit 6, stars after the storm. Disaster is a sudden event, such as an accident or a natural catastrophe that causes great damage or loss of life. In using language, we've Learned some of the very severe natural disasters happen in history. Do you remember what they are?

  学生:In 1881, a typhoon struck the small Vietnamese city of Haipon, bringing terrible strong winds. When it hit the coast, huge tidal waves caused severe floods, caused single lives of up to 300000 citizens.

  学生:In August 1949, the landest region of southwest France faced a major wildfire that lasted almost a week. Some 500 km square of forest land was burned and 82 people killed. Even today it is considered one of the Europe's most deadly forest fires.

  学生:The winter of 1950 to 1951 came to be known as the winter of terror when over 600 avalanches struck towns and villages in the mountains of the Swiss Australian helps caused by exceptionally heavy snowfall. Within a short period of time they destroyed buildings and forests and claimed over 256 lives.

  学生:In 1960, Chile suffered the strongest earthquake ever recorded in the 20th century. The shock is generally agreed to have had a magnitude of 9.5. It caused tsunami with waves up to 25 meters affecting places as far as Hawaii and Japan.

  学生:A blizzard hit Iran in February 1972, causing a week of extremely low temperatures. Winter storms brought as much as 7.9 meters of snow in the south of this country, resulting in the deaths of about 4000 people.

  学生:In July 2011, a drought struck East Africa. It was said to be the worst in 60 years, and not a single drop of rain fell for almost a whole year. It led to a severe food crisis and threatened the livelihoods of more than 9.5 million people. These were some of the worst disasters ever recorded in modern society. But eventually, the cities ever hit by disasters, we gather all their strength and thrive because there is always hope in people's hearts. However, in the old days, it would be very hard for people to survive and severe disaster, because they didn't have modern forecasting system or rescuing teams or an experience of rebuilding a city. I think some of you have heard about an ancient city of Pompeii that vanished in a volcano eruption. Let's have a look at what happened to an once prosperous ancient city, unit 6.
