  老师:Hello everyone, welcome to my class. I'm Dongqing from Beijing No. 4 High School, Fangshan Campus. In today's lesson, we are going to deal with using language part in Unit 6. We'll talk about ellipses. These are our learning objectives. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to, 1st, summarize the criteria for ellipses by finding, analyzing, and comparing the sentences given. Second, rewrite the sentences in different contexts by using ellipses. And the last one, write an advertising copy by using ellipses properly.

  老师:Before we start, I would like to show you a joke. Let's read and enjoy it. Mister Brown was reading his evening paper when there came a tremendous banging down the stairs. He jumped, ran to the hall and discovered his sons sprawled on the floor. Did you miss a step, asked Mister Brown. No, I caught every blessed one, came the bitter answer. Did you get the funny point of humor in this joke? When Mister Brown asked his son, did you miss a step? What he wanted to know was if his son fail because he missed a step, the full sentence should be, did you fall because you missed a step due to living on the words for because you? In his son's mind, the full sentence was, did you miss a step while you were falling down? So the sun answered, I caught every blessed one.

  老师:This joke is caused by inappropriate ellipses which may lead to ambiguity. So a very important point when using ellipses is to make sure your meaning can be understood. Actually, in today's lesson, we will learn how to use ellipses properly. Let's get started.

  老师:1St, what is ellipses? From the Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary, I got the definition. The act of leaving out a word or words from a sentence deliberately when the meaning can be understood without them. And now let's look at these two sentences and answer the question.

  老师:Sentence a, it's just typical that my journey is on one of the oldest lines as well as one of the deepest. Sentence B, it's just typical that my journey is on one of the oldest lines as well as one of the deepest lines.

  老师:What has been left out in sentence A? By comparing them, you can find the words lines has been left out. Then let's compare another two sentences. Fantasy, my office is only on the 3rd floor of the building, so quite low. Sentence d, my office is only on the third floor of the building, so it is quite low.

  老师:What has been left out in San Jose? Clever as you are, you must find the words. It is have been left out. So now think about this question. Why does the author leave them out? Instance a, one of the oldest lines and one of the deepest lines are two parallel non phrases linked by as well as, and the central words of both of them are lines.
