  老师:Hello everyone, welcome to my class. Today we'll learn the grammar of Unit 2, revised the passive voice, including the infinitive. First, let's make clear of the learning objectives in this class. You will first revise the passive voice. Second, master the usages of the passive infinitive, and finally try to use the passive voice properly in different contexts. And this is also the focus of this class. In the reading passage, we've Learned how Tony, a household robot, is tested out in class family. Let's call to mind what happened in a story by answering the questions. If you are not sure about the answer, please refer to your textbook.

  老师:Can we check now? 1. It was going to be tested out by Larry's wife, Claire. 2. Claire didn't want the robot in her house, but Larry persuaded her that the robot wouldn't harm her or allow her to be harmed. 3. Claire thought it was ridiculous to be offered sympathy by a robot. 4. The women were impressed by Claire, the house, and the delicious cuisine. 5. But even though Connie had been so clever, he would have to be rebuilt. You cannot have women falling in love with machines. Please look at the underlined parts. These structures are, yes, the passive voice. This is what we are going to focus on in this class.

  老师:So what is passive voice? Voice in English expresses the relationship of the subject to the action. There is active voice and passive voice. In the active voice, the subject does the action. For example, Tom painted the fence. The subject, Tom does the action paint. In a passive voice, the subject received the action. For example, the fence was painted by Tom. The subject, the fence receive the action, paint. Then, when and why do we use passive voice?

  老师:We usually use the passive voice in the following situations. 1. When emphasizing the receiver of the action. For example, six diamonds were stolen. The number of diamonds is the focus of the sentence. 2. When the actor is unimportant, unknown, or obvious. For example, this piece of wood is dried for 2 months. The person who drives the piece of wood is unimportant. My missing wallet was returned to of lost and found. We don't know who returned the missing wallet. I work for a company and I'm paid monthly. It is obvious that the company pays me 3 when showing a professional, neutral or objective tone. For example, the experiment was conducted over the course of two weeks. Here the passive voice expresses a professional tone. Then how to form passive voice? We form the passive voice by using a form of B and a past participle.
