14 Unit3 Food and Culture Listening and Speaking(Workbook)

  老师:Hello, everyone. Welcome to my class. Today we'll continue to talk about food and culture. And in this class, you will practice collecting information about a daily experience through listening to a conversation and identify the differences between a Chinese restaurant and an American one. Also, you will introduce a daily experience in a different culture or region.

  老师:Now, let's start it as gietto delarity. One side food brings people together on many different levels, is nourishment of soul and body, is truly love. And through what people eat, we can learn about their personality, character and culture.

  老师:At a minimum, the kinds of food local people consume tell us what they grow in their region, what kind of lives they live and what they like and do not like. Or could we also say, for example, those who like bold flavors tend to be bold themselves or those who like spicy food tend to have a hot temper? Maybe not.

  老师:Well, what we can say, however, is that culture and cuisine go hand in hand. And if you do not experience one, you can never really know the other. As we can see, food plays a so important role in our daily life.

  老师:Well, as a Chinese, if you had a chance to bring foreign friends to eat in a traditional Chinese restaurant, what dishes would you recommend and why? As for me, I would recommend Rat Breeze Pork. This is a very famous Hunan dish because Chairman Mao was from Hunan and this is his spirit food. I believe this tasty food will satisfy my foreign friends both in appetite and in culture interest.

  老师:Well, what about Western restaurant? Have you ever eaten in a western restaurant? And in what ways was it different from a tennis restaurant? Please think about these questions. You know, as for me, I ate at 1 with my cousin last week. That is quite different from a Chinese restaurant. Every person gets their own food and doesn't share. The tables are much smaller, which is good for conversation. And the restaurant serves food like steak, spaghetti and pizza. And people eat with knife and fork instead of chopsticks. That is quite different, right?

  老师:Well, today we are going to listen to a conversation that happened in a western restaurant. But before listening, please look at the picture on page 77 and predict what will be talked about. Well, this is a menu, right, what I listed on the menu. As we can see, there are different kinds of soup, French onion soup, seafood soup. As for salad, there are chicken salad and seafood salad. And also there are different kinds of dressings, like Southern Island, French Italian and blue cheese. Here, dressing refers to Xiaowei Ping. Well, apart from soup and the salad, there are different types of stick like grilled tea, bone steak served with French fries or baked potatoes, and
