52 Unit 11 Section A 3a-3b, Self Check

  老师:Hi everyone. Welcome back to my class. Today we'll continue learning Unit 11. How was your school trip? And in this lesson, we'll cover section a, 3, a to 3B and also self check.

  老师:So are you ready for the class? Let's kick it off. The learning objectives. By the end of this class, you'll be able to first summarize the spelling rules for simple past tense of regular verbs. Second, memorize the spelling rules for simple past tense of irregular verbs. And finally, talk about past events by using the past simple. Not so much.

  老师:For the learning objectives, I'm going to ask you a question. What did you do yesterday? Well, I can't hear you, so I'm going to tell you what I did yesterday, I did a lot of things. I walk all day, cook dinner, watch TV.

  老师:Now, you may notice that I did all of these things yesterday. So they're all past events. So instead of saying I walk all day, I should say I walked all day, and I cooked dinner, I watched TV, and I listened to music. I also used the computer and I studied French. And finally, I plant a trip. So these verbs here, they are all what we call regular verbs. Why do we say they're all regular verbs? Because they all follow some rules.

  老师:Now, let's walk out the rules. For example, walk, walked, cook, cooked, watch, watched, listened. What is a rule here? Yes, for those verbs, we only need to add Ed to the end of the verb. So we make walk in his past tense by adding Ed and turns it into walked.

  老师:What about used the computer? Why don't we add an Ed here? Yes, you're right, because it ends with E. So for these verbs, we add D to make it into a simple past form.

  老师:Then how about study here? Why do we moved? Why at IED? Yes, you're right, because it ends in a consonant plus y. So here we change y into IED to make the POS form. So study, studied. And finally, what about plan? Why do we say plant? Yes, because it ends in a vowel followed by a single consonant, and the last syllable is stressed. Now listen. Plan, the last syllable is stressed. Now this time we double the consonant and, and add Ed. So plan, plant. To help you understand, here we list all of the rules of making regular verbs into past forms.

  老师:第一类,一般情况直接加e, d 构成过去时态,如looked。第二类,以 e 结尾的单词,加 d 构成一般过去时,如lived。第三类,以辅音字母加 y 结尾的动词,我们先把 y 变为i,再加 1D 构成过去式,如 study studied。最后以重读闭音节节为动词。

  老师:末尾只有一个辅音字母的,我们双写这个辅音字母,再加e,d,例如stop,stopped,planned。需要注意的是,这些动词在变成过去时的时候,如果加了ED,那么 ED 在清辅音后面读作特,在清辅音和元音后面读作的,而在特和的后面读作 it now you can read after me,looked,play, played start,started。
