学生：Long ago, there was a village beside the sea. People there lives a happy life. However, a monster named yen lived there, too. Usually, it slept in the sea. Nian was very fierce and strong. It had hard horns and sharp teeth.
学生：On Chinese New Year's Eve, Nian came out of the sea and went into the village. It destroyed houses and crops. It also ate people in livestock. Then one year, when the monster was coming again, all the villagers hurried to the caves in the mountains except for an old granny. Then an old beggar came into the village. He asked the granny, why are people running away? The granny gave him some water and food and said, Monster Nien is coming. You should leave as soon as possible. Why are you leaving the granny side? I'm too old to run, the beggar smiled. Please let me stay in your home tonight. I can drive yen away. The granny didn't believe him, but she let him stay anyway.
学生：At night, Yan came to the village. As usual, there was light in the granny house. Only when yen rushed to the granny house, it stopped. It was shocked to see some red paper on the door. The door opened. Yen saw the old beggar standing in the yard wearing a red cloak and firecrackers were popping, and the bonfire kept flaming. Yan felt afraid and ran away quickly.
学生：The next day, when villagers came back and found everything safe and sound, they were quite surprised. The granny told them an old beggar drove Nian away with three things, the color of red fire and cracking sounds. After that, people put up the Spring Festival couplets on both sides of the front door before Chinese New Year's Eve. They light candles and set off firecrackers to avoid the attack of yen.
学生：They also wear new red clothes.
