17 Welcome to the unit+Reading_第2课时

  老师:Hi everyone, welcome to English class. I'm your teacher, sky. In today's lesson, we will try to have a better understanding of the reading Chinese scientist wings 2015 Nobel Prize. In the previous lesson, we have already read the news report about to Yoyo. Now you are encouraged to combine the key sentences and key phrases together to give me a summary of the news report. Here is my version.

  老师:To Yo. Yo won the Nobel Prize for her discovery of qinhausu, a great contribution to the fight against malaria, to acquired a good knowledge both traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine. She and her team solved many problems before they succeeded in making effective qinghao extracts. Facing the limited research resources, they extracted herbs using household containers, and they even volunteered to test Qinghao abstract on themselves first due to a lack of sufficient safety data. Eventually, their efforts paid. Hopefully such great achievement will inspire more scientists to draw on the wisdom of TCM to benefit the mankind.

  老师:Well, in the previous lesson, we mainly analyzed the outline of the whole news report and talked specifically about the problems and solutions to and her team encountered and adopted. In today's lesson, we will try to appreciate and learn the wonderful sentence patterns and ex expressions to build our language. As you see, the first sentence appears in my summary. And have you ever realized what is the function of the red part? Yes, it is to further explain the significance of the discovery of Qing hao soup. We call such part positive in grammar.

  老师:So now everyone can you find out more examples of such non phrases serving as explanations in the news report. May go through the whole passage once more. As you see in this news report we can find two long sentences. First one is in line one. To Yoyo has become the first female scientist of the People's Republic of China to receive a Nobel Prize, awarded for her contribution to the fight against malaria.

  老师:What is malaria? Then we have a noun phrase to further explain it, one of the deadliest diseases in human history. Another one is in line 32 in November 1972. Through trial and error, they successfully discovered Qinghengsu. The most effective part, the qinghao extracts, as you see, the underlined part, further explained the effect team.

  老师:How soon? Based on these examples, now we can draw a conclusion. We can use a noun phrase to further explain a term, thus making it easier to understand. A comma or a dash is often put before the explanation. As you see the first example, after malaria, there is a comma, and in the second sentence, after qinghao su, there is a dash.
