  老师:Hello, boys and girls. Welcome to today's lesson. I am Mrs. Dome from Nanjing Zhong Ying Middle School. Today we're going to learn Unit 8 detective stories, study skills. We are going to learn about how to read a novel. When we hold a book of novel in hand, we see its cover first. Usually the cover contains a lot of key information of the novel. Let's take the novel. We are going to read it. Today, for example, we are going to read one story of Sherlock Combs. It is. A study in scarlet. Scarlet means the color or bright red. On the cover, you can see a lit match giving lights to the wall, showing the shadows on the wall with the shimmering lights of the match, the word written in red, rage, is on the ground. This is an important clue in the case. Readers may wonder what the word rich mean. The red word respond to the title, Scarlet. Moreover, Scarlet here seems to refer to a murder case.

  老师:You see, the cover of a novel often attracts readers attention. It implies a lot of information from the story. Let's take another classic story of Sherlock Holmes as an example. It's the Hound of the basket wheels. From the cover, we may guess that the Hound means a fierce dog. And the story must have something to do with the house in the woods. It happened at night with flying beds. All these details suggest that this may be a story of horror and mystery.

  老师:Besides the picture on the cover, the second thing a reader must notice is the writer, or what we call the author of the novel. The writer of the series of Sherlock Holmes is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. If we do some research on him, we may understand better how he created such a classic and successful character. Arthur worked as a doctor before he became a writer. This background information may explain why he was such a writer with precise words and all the deductions are based on the scientific knowledge, instead of making things up. He once said in an interview that Sherlock Holmes was inspired by Dr Joseph Bell, who he Learned from when he studied at a medical school. Doctor Bell was a famous doctor at that time who could make a great deal of deductions on patient's looks and behaviors. Arthur also mentioned that he was influenced by Edgar Allan Poe and a French writer, Gabriel.
