  老师:Hello everyone. Nice to meet you again. I'm Li Jinhua from Hebinjin No. 1 Middle School. Today we will continue with our study of Unit 3, conservation. In this lesson, we will have a further understanding of the passage, the Sixth Extinction. Today we will focus on its writing features and work choices. We will deal with the writing style, writing methods and the writing purpose of it. Also, we will learn something about the adjectives and verb phrases in it.

  老师:Before we do anything, let's first review what we Learned in the last lesson. Look at this, my map. Do you still remember what is extinction? Yes. Extinction refers to entire species are wiped out on earth. How many times of extinction have happened in our earth history. Yes, five times. Do you still remember the two notable extinctions? Yes, the third mass extinction and the fifth event. During the third mass extinction, about 90% to ninety six percent all species were killed. During the fifth event, dinosaurs disappeared in the world.

  老师:Now many scientists say that we are entering the sixth mass extinction. Do you still remember its courses, effects and solutions? As for courses, this time human activity is to blame. Scientists say if a sixth mass extinction occurs, up to three corners for all species on earth could die out and human beings would be also at risk of extinction. However, we could do something to avoid the 6 extinction, right? First of all, we should significantly change the way we live. Secondly, we need to change the way we work and travel. Also, we need to improve our farming methods. These are the content of the text.

  老师:Now let's move on to the writing features of this passage. Different articles have different writing features. Now let's explore what writing style is this passage? What writing methods does the writer use? And what is its writing purpose? To answer these questions, let's read the passage carefully. Again, we will give the answers to these questions through analyzing the language used in it. While reading the passage, please complete this task.

  老师:Use different color pens to highlight at least one example for each of the four elements listed below, , opinions or predictions, reasons and solutions. For example, look at these two sentences. Which one do you think each of them belong to? Yes. The first sentence, in fact, over 90% of all species they ever lived are now extinct, is a fact. It states a truth or we say reality. The phrase in fact can help us decide.

  老师:The second sentence, many scientists say we are now entering the Earth 6 mass extinction is somebody's belief or viewpoint, so it is an opinion. Therefore, you see, a fact refers to something that is known to be true. It is usually used to state science, history, data and so on. Wh
