  老师:Hello everyone, welcome to this period. I am Wang Hanbing from Beijing No. 80 High School. And today we are going to learn the grammar part of Unit 1 relationships. It is about the past. Perfect. Okay, let's get started. In this lesson, we will talk about the past perfect. We have three parts. What is the past? Perfect. How to use it, and then we will do some practice.

  老师:Well, before we get started, I'd like to show you some examples. Read a sentence from our textbook and find out which action happened before the other. Number one, before Mister Jackson's taught me, science had been a subject full of strange words to me. In this sentence, there are two events. First, Mister Jackson taught me, and second, science had been a subject full of strange words to me. Look at the timeline. Could you arrange the events according to the timeline? Which happened first? Yes. Mister Jackson taught me happened in the past. And science had been a subject full of strange words to me, happened before he taught me. So we have the timeline like this.

  老师:Okay, here's another example. I knew I had chosen a job with a lot of stress. In this sentence, there are also two events. I knew it. And I had chosen a job with a lot of stress. So what happened earlier?

  老师:Well, I had chosen a job with a lot of stress, happened before I knew it, right? So, have you found out the rules? What does Past Perfect look like and when to use it? I'd like to show you more examples, and then we'll analyze it.

  老师:Number three, however, more than 1000 and 600 years later, some scientists found the lost towns that has been buried under the ashes. The town was first buried, then scientist found it out. So, had been buried, happened before found.

  老师:Number four, before the eruption occurred, it has been a booming Roman city. It is obvious that the boom in Roman city existed before eruption occurred. So had been happened before the eruption occurred. Next one, the bodies of people who had died in Pompeii left impressions in the ash. Now we know that people first died and then left impressions. So had died came first, and then we have left.

  老师:After reading all these sentences, have you found out what past perfect look like and what is the structure of past perfect? It should be like subject and had and past participle. Then how about when to use Pass Perfect? Usually the past perfect and the past simple in one sentence show the order of past events. Let's have a look at the timeline. Past perfect happen first and then came past simple. Both of them happened in the past. We use Past Perfect to talk about an event in the past which happened before the other past event. That is rule number one. This is the basic rule.
