老师：Hello everyone. Welcome to this lesson. I am your new English teacher. My name is Liu Jing. Today we are going to learn Unit 8, Lesson 1, roots and shoots. We will focus on reading. There is a picture of roots and shoots. Root is the part of the plant that is in the ground. Shoot is the first part of the plant grows and is visible above the ground. From this picture, can you make a guess what this lesson is about? About plants or about how to grow plants? Maybe some students say, maybe this lesson is about environment. Good. Let's begin our lesson.
老师：You can check your guests, look at the pictures, discuss the following questions. Number one, what is happening in each picture? Number two, have you ever done any of these things? Look at this picture. What is happening in it? The man is brushing his teeth and the tap is running. Have you ever done this? Leave the tap running while you brush your teeth?
老师：Some of you say yes. The second picture, what is happening in it? The woman is leaving the house with the light still on. Have you ever done this? Leave a light on when you go out? I'm afraid some people have ever done this. How about this picture? What is happening in it? Someone is dropping a piece of litter on the ground and he can't be bothered to pick it up and throw it into the nearby dustbin. Have you ever done this? Drop a piece of litter and can't be bothered to pick it up? Can't be bothered to do something means don't want to make the effort to do something. In Chinese, all the things seem to be small, but if everybody does these things, they will turn out to be huge problems.
老师：Think about this question. What would happen if everybody did the same things? Millions of gallons of water would be wasted. Millions of lights would be on. Millions of pieces of litter would be dropped. And all of this would be very harmful. The resources would be wasted and the environment would be destroyed. Actually, these kinds of things are called just me ism.
老师：Now let's begin our reading. Read paragraph 1, discuss the questions below. Number one, what is destiny ism? Number two, why is just me ism a problem? Number three, do you have any suggestions on how to solve the problem? Number one, what is justivism? Just meeism is a way of thinking that focuses on caring for just oneself and ignores the environment, animals and the community. Number two, why is just me ism a problem? There will be nobody to care and look after the environment. Number three, do you have any suggestions on how to solve the problem? A solution would be to make them understand that even the smallest action can change the world. So they should take action whenever possible for the environment, animals and their community.
