  老师:Hello boys and girls. Welcome to my reading lesson. I'm miss down from Changping 2nd Experimental Primary School. Today we are going to read a book about Olympics. Before the lesson, you need to prepare your pen and worksheet. During the lesson, please listen carefully, think deeply and write clearly. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to describe an Olympic hero. Now let's enjoy reading. Look, what do you know from the cover page?

  学生:I know the title of this book is Olympic Heroes. The author is Julian Powell. And there's a man, maybe he is in the running race.

  老师:You're a good reader. This is an information book from Big Cat. There are lots of photos in the book. The cover page shows a photo of a running man. Who is he? We'll find out later. Open the book, we'll see.

  老师:Contents. What do you know from the contents? Yes. There are eight headings here. Which one can help us with new words? Good. Glossary is a dictionary with meanings of some keywords and index can tell us where to find them. They are the features of an information book. What can you predict from the headings?

  学生:From brave beginners? I think maybe someone did some briefing from battling illness. I think maybe someone had to suffer illness.

  老师:Good guessing. Now let's get to know the heroes in the book. After listening, please answer this question. Who are the Olympic heroes? In the book.

  学生:Olympic heroes written by Jillian Powell, going for gold. The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece in 1896. American James Connelly was the first medal winner. The first Winter Olympics we're in 1924, the first champions medals were not gold, silver. Since then, many of the world's top athletes have gone for Olympic gold. But some have to fight harder than most to become Olympic champion.

  学生:Hard times. The 1936 Olympics were held in Germany. The German leader, Adolph Hitler was a Nazi. He believed that the white German people were better than all others. He didn't even want black athletes to take part in the Olympics. Jesse Owens, this man showed the black athletes could be great champions. He broke 11 Olympic records, the Berlin gains and won four gold medals.

  学生:Brave beginners, these men were the first to come from a hot, sunny country to compete in a snow sport. At home, they have to practice on tracks and sandy beaches. The Jamaican Bob sled tea. They had to borrow Bob sleds from other teams for the Winter Olympics. They crashed on a run, walked on to the finish line as the crowd cheered.
